PATTERN PLACE is a crosscutting theme that inherently bridges the STEAM disciplines with a layered cultural and local emphasis. The goal for Pattern Place is for visitors to become immersed in observing, analyzing, predicting, and creating a wide range of visual and mathematical patterns in our world and discover that patterns are everywhere. From patterns on the facades to hexagon shaped furniture and graphics, geometric pattern is the environmental visual message and architectural form.   

 

Exhibits include:

  • At the museum's entry, the Digital Mosaic large-scale digital installation invites visitors to add their pattern-ized selfie while immersed into a ever-changing collection of specific patterns

  • A walkthrough Mirror Maze of reflections customized to echo the hexagons throughout the gallery and museum

  • MicroEye Digital scopes reveal Patterns in Nature

  • Large Color wheel and Kaleidoscope

  • Geometry Lab with stations to build platonic solids and light constructions

  • Symmetry Shop with pattern blocks and mirror stations

  • Escher-like tessellations stations

  • Two of Dick Termes “Termespheres” with spiral patterns

  • Custom tri-color Harmonograph maker

  • Code Play coding station

  • Galton Math Probability Board

  • Scoops Ice Cream "Shop" where visitors can merge pretend play with vertical patterning

  • Patterns Around the World, where visitors can create pattern based art from 30 different countries.

  • Custom Quilt Wall featuring Nordic and Lakota quilt art to echo the region's Additionally, primarily of Scandinavian and Native American heritage's strong quilting tradition
